History

In 1947, the Government of Bihar decided to start a College of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering in Sindri. Dr. J.J. Rudra (formerly Principal of Guindy Engineering College in Madras) was appointed as the first Principal, land was acquired and building was started. The first batch of 30 students (15 Electrical and 15 Mechanical) was admitted in July 1949, but as the building was not ready, the students were sent to Bihar College of Engineering in Patna, which had a degree program in Civil Engineering only. Dr. Rudra passed away in early 1950 and Mr. D.L. Deshpande was appointed the Principal. He came to Sindri on September 15, 1950 ( I had joined there on September 2, 1950) and decided to start classes in November 1905. A fresh batch of 60 students (30 Electrical and 30 Mechanical) was admitted and classes started with three professors and a Workshop Superintendent. In early 1951 some additional faculty members were appointed. In July 1951, the students from Patna came to Sindri and also a new batch of 60 students was admitted, with the result that there were three groups of students, first year, second year and third year at that time. Thus, the first batch of students (these were the ones who studied in Patna for two years) graduated from Bihar Institute of Technology in 1953 under the umbrella of the newly formed Bihar University. Later (in 1961), it was affiliated to Ranchi University.

In January 1951, Mr. Deshpande proposed that the name of the institution be changed to Bihar Institute of Technology and this was subsequently approved by the Government, effective July 1951.
