Ref: Indian Era Sunday, September 2, 2007: The BIT Alumni Association of North America, Inc. (BIT) a non profit organization held their annual alumni meeting at the Palace of Jaipur in South Plainfield, NJ on Saturday afternoon. Every year, these alumni meetings take place over the Labor Day Weekend with members coming from all over the US and Canada Although the association was formed in 1980 in the state of Georgia, the alumni meet was held in New Jersey. The main goal of the association is to raise money to fund scholarship programs for toppers of Bit Sindri engineering college in Jharkhand, India. They are already awarding about 50 scholarships every year and planning to expand more. This year, one of the members, Mrs. Sandra Dasgupta, in memory of Mr. Purnendu Dasgupta, donated $15000, of which half is to be utilized to improve the library facility in the department of Metallurgy and the remaining half to be added to the NRO deposit pool. While aiming to increase the donations and sponsorships, BIT is also inviting new companies to the campus in order to maximize campus selections. Run by volunteer office bearers. This association keeps it’s costs extremely low. The members are so committed that the expenditures for the meets are also shared by the attending members. This year’s meet was organized mainly by Mr. Sudhaker Raj, and his wife Kushi Sinha under guidance of veteran Dr. Uday Sinha. Four key people were responsible for the forming of BIT constitution years back. Two of them, Dr. Chandrika Prasad and Professor Naresh Kumar Sinha were present at the meeting. The afternoon event comprised of a get together, lunch, speeches and live musical entertainment by Mrs. Urmila Prasad, Tarang Music Group. Mr. Ranjit Sinha spoke of establishing a scholarship fund of for Environmental Science since it very much an issue today and the fact that he himself is from that field. He pointed out that other fields like Information Technology had sufficient attention and donors but not this field. He would be willing to assist in its formation. Mr. Yogendra Chadda also added his support to Mr. Sinha’s statements. President Mr. Paramjit Chadda also expressed interest in inviting BIT director Prof. S. K. Singh for next year event. The meet ended with games and a promise to meet again next year. |
